Grab your nuts, squirrels are back

Although the Black Squirrel Festival is a unique tradition, the original idea was inspired by an event
held each year at Wooster College.
Members of the Association of College Union International had regional meetings once a year to discuss
business and share about their student activities.
Representatives were present from colleges all over Ohio, Michigan, and Canada.
"Representatives from Wooster College gave a presentation on their annual J.I. Packer Day," said Jon
Harper, assistant director of the Student Center.
"All the students there loved the event and were very enthusiastic about participating," Harper said.
"We wanted to give our students a day similar to that, where they could relax between classes and show
pride in their university.
"We decided on a Black Squirrel day because that is something rare to Kent State," he said. "The Black
Squirrel has been a resident at Kent State for 35 years, after a trapper arranged to let the squirrels
loose on our campus."
Students here can show Kent Pride by giving support to a few special causes at the festival, Harper
said.
"Besides selling hot dogs and hamburgers, there will be a special sale going on.
When students purchase snow cones or cotton candy, all the proceeds will go toward a new scholarship
account," Bradshaw said.
The United Way will also have a booth were students can purchase raffle tickets. The student with the
winning ticket will receive a rare Beanie Baby.
