Kent Bound may ease transition from local community colleges

Christal Kelley

Staff Writer

Kent Bound is a program that was designed to help make the transition from a community college to a four-year university a little smoother.

Students can transfer from one of the following community colleges: Cuyahoga, Lakeland, and Lorain.

The program was started in the fall of 1996, and in its first year has helped over 150 students make the transition to Kent State.

"Kent Bound is a program designed in helping students ease transition from school," said Nancy DellaVecchia, who runs the program for the Admissions office.

Louri Check, a student coming to Kent State through Kent Bound, said, "I got involved with the program because it offered accessibility to transfer smoothly and I was offered a scholarship."

In order to participate in the program students must complete various enrollment forms. Students must complete an application six months prior to the beginning of the term they are considering enrolling.

Students must have a cumulative 2.0 GPA in their course work and be in good academic standing. Students who are transferring to Kent State also have an opportunity to receive a $1,000 scholarship, which may be renewed for a maximum of three years if they maintain a 3.0 GPA.

In order to be considered for a scholarship students must: submit the participation form at least one full semester prior to the term you plan to enroll in; apply for admission; and, be accepted to Kent State University by the May 1 scholarship deadline.

And last but not least, students must complete an associate degree or a minimum of 45 quarter hours (30 semester hours) at the community college with a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher and enroll at Kent State on a full-time basis.
