ATHENS — Michael Phelps turned on the turbos yesterday, capturing two gold medals at the Athens Olympic Games.

But it was Klete Keller who anchored the second gold, in the 400-meter freestyle relay, holding off Australian anchor Ian Thorpe.

Keller hit the touch pad in 7:07.33. The Aussies were timed in 7:07.46. The bronze-medalists from Italy were timed in 7:11.83.

Phelps opened his night in butterfly, setting an Olympic record of 1:54.04 in the 200-meter event. Phelps, the world record-holder (1:53.93), broke the Olympic standard set by teammate Tom Malchow in 2000.

After Phelps came Takashi Yamamoto of Japan in 1:54.56 and Stephen Parry of Great Britain in 1:55.02.

Phelps won the 400-meter individual medley and added bronzes in the 200 freestyle and 400 freestyle relay over the weekend.

Now he has five medals, including three golds, with three races left.

Romania’s Camelia Potec captured the women’s 200-meter freestyle, timed in 1:58.03. Italy’s Federica Pellegrini won the silver medal in 1:58.22, and France’s Solenne Figues bagged the bronze in 1:58.45. Dana Vollmer of the United States landed in sixth at 1:58.98.

Ukraine’s Yana Klochkova won her second straight gold in the women’s 200 individual medley in 2:11.94, holding off Amanda Beard of the United States, who touched in 2:11.70. Kristy Coventry, an Auburn University student representing Zimbabwe, earned the bronze medal.

Katie Hoff of the United States placed seventh.

South Africa’s Roland Schoeman was the fastest qualifier for the men’s 100-meter freestyle, clocked in 48.39. World record-holder and defending champion Pieter van den Hoogenband of the Netherlands qualified second. Australian star Ian Thorpe got the eighth and final spot in Wednesday’s finals, nudging out two-time gold-medalist Alexander Popov of Russia.

In morning preliminaries, Ian Crocker and Jason Lezak failed to qualify for the semifinals.
