Artists can apply for series

The Sculpture Center of Cleveland is currently accepting applications for the 2005-2006 Window to Sculpture series.

The series offers sculptors the opportunity to learn how to install exhibitions and to display their work for an interested audience.

“We don’t set a limit for what we’re asking people to apply with,” said Deirdre Lauer, who is in charge of gallery exhibitions.

The gallery exhibits site-specific work, where artists design work for the available space, as well as individual works of diverse artistic viewpoints.

Window to Sculpture began in 1990 from the window of the previous location of the gallery. An artist now has 1,000 square feet to display new works.

Selected artists have a four-week exhibition slot, promotions and space to provide the exhibition. Artists can sell their works and keep 100 percent of their sales.

“Emerging artists need feedback from their peers in the community,” Lauer said.

She said the experience of receiving educated feedback is important in the development of artists.

“I would be excited by the opportunity to display my work in an art gallery,” said Monica Fuhrman, former Kent State ceramics student. “I would be interested to see what I could learn from the experience.”

Fuhrman said she is seriously considering applying for the series.

Lauer said “the whole point of the series is giving emerging sculptors the opportunity to live through the full display process.”

David E. Davis founded the center because he felt it was harder for a sculptor to obtain an exhibition than a two-dimensional artist.

Applicants for the series must be Ohio artists. The entries must be postmarked by Oct. 31.

Application forms are available at www.sculpturecenter.org or by calling (216) 229-6527

The Sculpture Center is a not-for-profit organization located at 1834 E. 123rd St. in Cleveland. During exhibitions, gallery hours are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday-Friday and Saturdays from noon to 4 p.m. Admission, parking and receptions with artists are free.
